this is a backup threadfeel free to use it if, for whatever reason, you ever find yourself unable to get ahold of the mods or janitors (e.g. discord experiences an outage)
I sure do love discord, it is such a stable application and nothing ever goes wrong with it

Are we allowed to delete generic pepe/wojak etc OP images (pic related) when they are just placeholders for the OP image and doesn't relate to the thread in any way? I sometimes see them getting deleted by other jannies/mods, but figured out it's best to get a clarification before accidentally starting a frog genocide
>>8362mods delete this please
>>8362>I'm meant to moderate things for no apparent reasonWhat did he mean by this?

>>8362>HNNNGEEH>BNNGHEEEYUUEEHGHH>BONNGA WONNGA DONNGA BONGY>YUOEEEOEOEHAOHAHEOHAOEHOAHOAHOAEH
>>8368People don't have to be "on-topic" 100% of the time, you're only meant to remove Off-Topic content and other rule violations. Someone posting a frog in of itself doesn't warrant deletion when he's not even derailing a thread or trying to bait posts of some kind or whatever else could warrant a file deletion.Moderate rule breaking content or things that have a high likelihood of resulting in rule breaking posts, not people posting inconsequential images.>Not everything that gets reported needs to be deleted or banned; don't hesitate to use the clear button if no rule is broken.>Keep in mind: People come to 4chan to have fun
>>8369It would be an interesting experiment to delete this posts image to leave without any context>>8371That's fair, but I should note this isn't something I just thought and proposed - I saw it happening before, and some search on 4chan archiving sites shows users have complained/praised about this on multiple boards before. Perhaps there are mods with different opinions on this, and that's why I decided to ask on /j/ where we are anonymous
>>8372>I saw it happening beforeKeep in mind that janitors will only know they're doing something wrong if they ask or if they're corrected, this could take years of doing something wrong before it happens.>usersListening to users is a surefire way of over-moderating things.>Perhaps there are mods with different opinions on thisI can think of particular cases, yes, but even they'll tell you something like: "NOOOOOOOO MUH PARTICULAR BORDERINO CAN'T HAVE X IMAGE THE OFF-TOPIC RULE CLEARLY ALLOWS YOU TO DELETE ANYTHING THAT ISN'T TOPICAL!!! IT STAYING UP WOULD, HMMM, IT JUST WOULD RUIN THE BOARD OKAY???!!!! Oh, on other boards? Sorry, this only applies to this board because of board culture and since it's le special :^)". >Inb4 "NOOOOO YOU CAN'T JUST SHIT TALK MY BORDERINO HECKIN MODERATION!!!!"If the shoe fits...>that's why I decided to ask on /j/ where we are anonymousI don't think this subject is that consequential that you'd need the veil of anonymity in order to get honest second opinions. Hopefully you don't have reservations about DMing mods with questions or posting in moderation.
>>8362Personally, I feel that for OP images ESPECIALLY, it's very important from a board quality perspective that the image that starts the thread is on-topic with the board's subject matter. The OP image is the "Cover" of the thread to me. When I view the Gallery, it shows me a display of images. Take /vg/ for example, if I go on there right now, I see a wide variety of different items. Let's say I'm looking for a thread about Dragon Ball -- At a glance, I can see a thread with the OP image of Super Saiyan Blue Goku and immediately be clued in that that thread might be just what I'm looking for without having to read further into it.Now imagine if the entire board was Pepes or Wojaks. Sure I can just dig around by reading the thread subjects, or typing "Dragon Ball" into search, but why should the cover of the Dragon Ball General thread be a completely unrelated frog? To a normal user this would be in my opinion a lower quality experience than if the thread OP was posted with an image relevant to the intended discussion. Now, if someone is using a pepe or wojak in their reply within the thread? This is less impactful to the board's quality. In my opinion it's still lower quality than if the poster had used an on-topic image, but it's not that big of a deal since it isn't what will persist on the main page of the board for potentially days if the thread is slow enough. The /vg/ example can be generally applied to most boards that have specific topics in mind. Imagine if someone posted a Madoka thread on /a/, or an Evangeleon thread on /w/, but instead of a related image they used a wojak. Definitely a stark contrast. But if they did the same thing on a more generalized board such as /b/, /g/ or /biz/ for example, well it's not like I'm looking for a particular theme when I look for threads on there anyhow, so it's less impactful on the board's quality. These are just my thoughts on the subject as to why it might be different depending on the board.
>>8362I sometimes see people complain about Pepe/Wojak OP images, in which case I just delete the image and complaint post, and leave it at that.I haven't been told NOT to do this, so I assume it's not wrong.>>8376I agree pretty strongly with this. Unless it's like a topical themed Pepe/Wojak that fits the thread theme, I think it's a poor OP image.
discord outage appears to be happening.

RETVRN TO TRADITION
>>9960
sometimes i do wonder if perhaps other chat platforms have developed to the degree that they'd be more appropriate than discord, just from a privacy and ease of use standpoint, since so many people these days have personal accounts. discord's own convenience is a double edged sword in that regard
>>9995But IRC has been around for decades now.
>>10000IRC is practically unusable on most mobile devices because of app background rate limits/throttling
>>9995i second this viewpoint; personally, i feel we should return to Rizon>>10002used a 2010 era smartphone to connect to #4chan on rizon net when the site was down and the channel was highly active with no issuesi think the main problem with going back to IRC would be a majority of janitors simply wouldn't know how to get in. it's an ease of installation/use issue.shame rlly
>>10004I mean we're all already on Discord so it shouldn't be that hard to give support to the few that can't figure it out for whatever reason there. Personally I don't have that much of a preference either way, though in some ways Discord can make it easier to look up past archives of discussions, which could be seen as both a merit and demerit depending on the situation, but I often find useful to do a quick search to see if a topic has come up before, or backread stuff that was said while I was away. As far as I know IRC only really shows you stuff that was said when you were online to see it? (Though I haven't used it that much so could be wrong.)Also from what I've heard being able to do voice calls on Discord has at least made the initial orientation process easier compared to however it used to work, though that's only really relevant during that onboarding period.
>>10006https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BNC_(software)there's this but it's yet another step for janitorsalso, you raise a good point about onboarding
>>10004sorry, i wasn't clear. the apps work perfectly well in the foreground. but their internet access while in the background is greatly limited if not entirely restricted, which makes mobile push notifications more or less impossible
>>10008right, that's something i hadn't consideredthanks for clarifying
>>10004I use IRC a lot but honestly it just doesnt have enough features for our purposes. It isn't fit for purpose for janiteam.
>>10011>enough features for our purposes.irc needs fregs
>>10015Frankly, this.
Since Discord doesn't like its users' internet anonymity, the way I was bypassing government block on Discord got me locked out of my account - I already tried the usual ways to get myself back in. I created a new account which I *believe* is safe from getting locked out again.I'll email GA about this, but I also recently lost my personal mail server so I need my e-mail address changed too orzMaking this post here is my only means to vouch myself for the random e-mail I'll send.
Lost my discord account due to stupid, sent an email to RAHoping he sees it soon because having reports in the queue is going to drive me insane
>>10263if anyone else sees this post, i have it on good authority that it's since been sorted out (so no need to ping RA about it)
I have the mandate of heaven and discord pooping won't stop me from declaring it.
