The Virtual Embodiment and Robotics Re-embodiment is working with virtual reality as a means of rehabilitation, as well as interfacing and acceptance of prosthetics and a sense of agency with avatars. Avatars being both virtual and non virtual "containers" for the consciousness.
Essentially, there's some of research on how and what our brains can interface with successfully and how (through the same mechanisms as mental rehearsal) pathways in the brain can be exercised in VR without having to do anything in reality.
