There are a lot of reasons why I don't take this whole magic thing seriously. For instance, my belief in empiricism, but I will bypass that for a moment and talk about another reason I don't give this stuff much credence:

Those who practice "Magick" tend to be mentally defective

Through Skype and various imageboard communities I have come to know perhaps dozens of practitioners of magic. Some appear to be merely eccentric but otherwise completely functional people. Others appear to have severe mental health problems that prevent them from functioning in society on even the most basic level.

The namesake of this board - FringeWizard is a good example of one such non-functional severely mentally damaged individual who besides his belief in "magick" has shown himself to have severe mental health problems.

Others who believe in or practice magick appear to be autistic (I don't mean people with Aspergers. I mean actual full blown autists or paranoid schizophrenics).

If these belief systems had any merit I would think mental defectives wouldn't make up such a huge chunk of their practitioners and adherents. Of course damaged minds are drawn to a fatally flawed set of beliefs that have no basis in reality (as far as modern science can demonstrate).

This reason (among many others) is why I don't take magick seriously.

What do you guys think? Can you give me a good response to counter this?

That's because you only see what you want to see. You see some mentally defective individuals on imageboards, forums and websites related to esoterism and conclude that there is an exclusive correlation between esoterism and mental illness.

The truth is that a lot of successful people, CEOs, celebrities, many businessmen, that you probably define as perfectly mentally healthy individuals, practice magick everyday. Since you are a mundane, you think that Jay-Z is just some harmless singer who's simply here for/thanks to money and likes to make weird hand signs during concerts because heh, it looks cool, who knows.

There are many multinational companies who pay satanic churches, for instance.

So, no, magick is all around you. You just don't see it and cherrypick in order to validate your skepticism :

>If these belief systems had any merit I would think mental defectives wouldn't make up such a huge chunk of their practitioners and adherents

This statement implies that you're working with a representative sample. Did you examine the thousands of clubs, fraternities, institutions with remotely magickal belief systems around the world to conclude that magickal practitioners are usually mentally ill ?

You make the classic mistake of thinking that hours of websurfing can give you an accurate depiction of the real world. Just like tumblrites landwhales believe that every man is out to rape them, or MRAs believe that every woman wants to cut their penis off.

>Others who believe in or practice magick appear to be autistic

Interesting, in my experience people who believe in scientism are incapable of critical thinking and usually fall into the "authoritarian follower" category. They're usually not scientists themselves, but they "believe in" science as other people believe in their own religion.

But who cares anyway. You eat your GMO foods and your fluoride, we do our breathing exercises and detoxification, life goes on.

I'm interested to know what your belief in empiricism say regarding quantum physics ? The placebo effect ?

Gonna steal a bit from Tony Robbins, here. look around you right now for anything blue that you can see in your field of vision. Spend 15 seconds or so just looking for anything blue.

Now, close your eyes…

and try to remember all the red things that you saw.

you probably can't remember more than a very few, unless you're in your bedroom or something and can remember its contents because you spend a lot of time there, in which case this exercise is moot. The point is that we see what we look for. You probably saw some greenish things that you counted as blue, just to have more blue things, when blue was what you intended to see.

Do aficionados of magic tend to be mentally defective? Or are you allowing confirmation bias to shape your perception? There are reasons to take magic seriously and reasons not to, but this sort of impossible to measure metric of the mental states of people you've encountered on the Internet isn't a good one for either.

I've met some people who were scary smart and who believed in the efficacy of magic wholeheartedly. I know that some of the richest and most successful people in history have been occultists. I've also met a lot of broken people who were clearly trying to use magic to fix their lives, unsuccessfully. None of that means anything.

 No.21419

You are right, there are a lot of people on the internet who believe in magicks and are mentally fucked up.

But there are a lot of us who are mentally sane, I don't know why there are so many mentally defective people in the area.
But dude, magick is real, just try it by your own, it's perfectly normal if you don't believe in it because of our society, just open your mind and give it a chance, it will change your life for sure.

If my grammar is bad it's because my english is not native btw.

I think you should experience and play with magic before making judgements and conclusions of it.

Isn't that what empiricist would do? EXPERIMENT and then make CONCLUSIONS.

You can be empiricist and magician at the same time, ya know. Cut past the bullshit and experience mystic truths for yourself!

Your observations are correct. It isn't for everyone, and many people end up fucking themselves up. Medicine tends to attract the infirm to paraphrase an old saying. The Esoteric certainly attracts the anti-social and self-destructive, but if you can find the path and walk it there are great rewards to be found. Also, our society in general is extremely sick and full of sick people, so it isn't too surprising that they make themselves heard in the online Esoteric community as well, and my experiences with flesh and blood occultists reflect these same trends. It's really up to you OP.

>The namesake of this board - FringeWizard is a good example of one such non-functional severely mentally damaged individual who besides his belief in "magick" has shown himself to have severe mental health problems.

My problems all existed way before magick and I am slowly rising up above them and fixing them. If ten years from now I am a completely different and healthier person then it will only be testament to the power of magick to transform peoples lives.

Most of magick is all about fixing up life's problems, self-improvement, etc.

If you know an old occult community where they've been doing magick for decades and they are still shit people you have right to complain but we are young men and women in our 20s or even younger here.

I will guarantee the majority of people on any 4chan type of sites look like "autists". Most successful people don't spend a lot of time posting on these kind of sites. not to say none do, but lets go with the percentages here….

on top of that this seems to be something that you really have to dig for and people in the rat race of life simply don't have the time or desire to dive into "magick".

First, there's no universal metric for sanity. Second, there are types of magic, use of otherwise "magical" elements which are not supernatural in nature but psychological, a ritual as much as yoga or meditation or psychotherapy or drug use or whatever other psychological tool/procedure you want to include here. In other words, just because I'm engaging in something which has elements of esotericism does not mean I literally believe I am summoning up anything other than an internal state within myself to serve my own purposes.

>The namesake of this board - FringeWizard is a good example of one such non-functional severely mentally damaged individual who besides his belief in "magick" has shown himself to have severe mental health problems.

Absolutely true, he's a fruit loop.

>Others who believe in or practice magick appear to be autistic (I don't mean people with Aspergers. I mean actual full blown autists or paranoid schizophrenics).

Paranoid schizophrenia and autism are two very different things. It's rare to find a paranoid schizophrenic who is deeply involved in magic because they tend to want what they lack, which is to say, to find a centering point. A mental anchor during otherwise very weird experiences is a gift, a tool which is absolutely essential before any kind of psychonautics. A schizophrenic rarely has such a mental anchor or totem and therefore can get lost, and believe me, when you're hallucinating, being lost can be absolutely terrifying. Imagine being at sea in the middle of an awful hurricane without a boat, with no sense of direction. That's what it's like to be lost. Terrifying shit.

Autists on the other hand may easily be susceptible to magical thinking in the negative sense–not in the sense of controlling one's thoughts and channeling them towards an end, which is positive, but believing literally in spirits outside of the psyche, which entirely misses the point. In fact, it's a very autistic thing to do to believe in these sorts of things outside of their proper contexts. Context in magic is everything.

It should be noted that being a fruit loop is relative to those who aren't. Plus, I find him vaguely funny. Annoying, but funny in his own way.

Eh, whatever. It's not healthy to be too sane all the time, that in itself is a form of insanity. The psychonaut knows this; civilization has largely lost it, but hell, over 200,000 years of psychonautics in the form of shamanism sets a strong precedent. We could easily learn those techniques again in a relatively short period of time, and it's not like people haven't kept that flame alive.
